Baked Cake Donuts {Wilton Style}

On my latest shopping trip to Michaels, I came upon the Wilton Nonstick 6-Cavity Donut Pan and immediately fell in love! Since I live only a couple blocks from a Tim Hortons, I have come to crave donuts more than ever, so I saw this as an opportunity to save money and spend time doing something I love, getting to bake!

After all, we all can appreciate the joy of delicious baked cake donuts! The Donut Pan allows for 6 donuts to be baked at a time. As soon as I got home, I washed the pan and set out to make my first cake donuts. Luckily, Wilton provides a great baked cake donut recipe and lucky for me, I had all the ingredients on hand to make it.

These Baked Cake Donuts Recipe is not only easy, but delicious!

Baked Cake Donut Recipe

Baked Cake Donuts (Wilton Recipe)

2 cups cake flour, sifted
¾ cup granulated sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
¼ tsp. ground nutmeg
1 tsp. salt
¾ cup buttermilk
2 eggs, lightly beaten
2 tbsp. butter, melted

Preheat oven to 425*F. Spray doughnut pan with nonstick cooking spray.

In a large mixing bowl, sift together cake flour, sugar, baking powder, nutmeg and salt. Add buttermilk, eggs and butter. Beat until just combined. Fill each doughnut cup approx. 2/3 full.

Bake 7-9 minutes or until the top of the doughnuts spring back when touched. Let cool in pan for 4-5 minutes before removing. Finish doughnut with chocolate glaze, cinnamon sugar or confectioners’ sugar. Doughnuts are best served fresh.

I didn’t have buttermilk or cake flour on hand, so I substituted the cake flour with all-purpose flour, but used 2 tablespoons less than the recipe calls for and I used 1 tablespoon of white vinegar mixed with about a cup of milk to substitute for the buttermilk. Both substitutions worked fantastically. I loved how easy the recipe was and had never previously considered that baking donuts could be so quick and painless.

And the end result? Well, the donuts turned out fabulously and yielded 12 donuts with the recipe. I coated all the donuts in cinnamon and sugar and had to remind myself not to eat them all (haha). I happily only ate one, while my Husband enjoyed a couple.  My children were already in bed by the time the donuts came out of the oven, so they will get a yummy donut surprise tomorrow.

If you are a baking fan like myself and want to save money on donuts, then I really recommend getting this pan and giving them a try!

I wish I never would have read this…now I’m off to buy a doughnut pan and some cake flour! LOL! At least it’s a healthier option to the friend ones I can’t seem to get enough of.

I love cake doughnuts. They’re definitely my favorite. I’ve tried to make them many times and always mess up. I think I’ll just have to give in and buy this pan. I have some amazon gift cards from swagbucks. So I’ll probably do it tonight. Thanks!

I am so glad I found your recipe. My company (Demarle at Home) just sent me a donut Flexi-mold. The first recipes I tried were not very good. But this one sounds different. I’m going to try them in the morning. (I teach cooking classes for DAH). I also use my pan to fix a “fancy” veggie…shredded veggies tightly pressed into the pan. Then unmolded onto the plate.

I do not eat donuts because they give unrelenting indigestion because they are fried. I have a donut every few years and regret it. I bought the pans on a whim and love the recipes that come with them. This recipe is included with the pans. I like to mix cinnamon, confectionary sugar and a dash of fresh ground nutmeg together to coate the donuts. Very tasty! Not fried!

Donuts you can make at home sound heavenly. I don’t own a donut pan, but if I bought one, I would be tempted to have home made donuts every morning. I guess I’ll add it to my “maybe someday” list so I don’t gain 1,000 pounds this summer, laugh.

Baked cake donuts are my favorite. I like to make a batch on the weekends to snack on during the week. I need to pick up a Wilton Nonstick 6-Cavity Donut Pan to replace mine.

Can you make these in advance and store them. If so, how do you store them. I’m having a running group over and would like to make them the night before. Thank you so much.

Absolutely! These would easily keep in the fridge for a few days, or put in the freezer for a longer period!
