When it comes to frosting, whether it be for cupcakes, cookies, or cake, I usually make my own. You will find that if you want to actually decorate with frosting, you will need to use homemade vs store bought.
The frosting in the tubs is yummy, but it doesn’t hold a design as it is a loose consistency frosting. My Best Ever Buttercream Frosting will have you decorating like a pro in no time, plus it’s absolutely delicious!
Best Ever Buttercream Frosting
You will need:
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup shortening
4 cups icing sugar
4 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
In a bowl, mix together butter and shortening until smooth. Mix in vanilla extract.
Slowly mix in icing sugar until combined. Add milk until smooth.
Depending on how firm you want your frosting, additional milk can be added if necessary. You can also add food colouring to change the colour.

Pretty easy! I am always on the look out for better recipes for frosting especially; I find the store products to be full of chemicals and other items (no idea what they are). Thanks!

Buttercream icing is my favorite and it HAS to be homemade! I find the store bought ones to be too sweet.

I would love try this recipe. I LOVE icing! I can’t stand cake that doesn’t have enough icing. 🙂

I’m not a fan of icing, usually too sweet for my taste. This looks very spreadable and a very pretty colour. A nice frosting to work with.

This looks like a great recipe. It’s interesting that you use both butter and shortening, I’ve never used them together before. When you say “icing sugar”, that’s Confectioner’s Sugar, right? I don’t bake from scratch all that much, can you tell? LOL
Kristen says
Hi Cathy! Yes, icing sugar is confectioner’s sugar! I am here in Canada, so a name change a bit! hahah
