If you’re going on vacation and planning to take your feline friends with you, it’s going to be important to plan ahead. While there are many hotels that accept pets, not all accept cats. This is why many vacationing cat owners decide to do a vacation rental instead, if they’re bringing their cats along.
In a vacation rental, you will have more freedom than you usually do in hotels. Here are some things to know about choosing cat friendly vacation rentals!
Choosing Cat Friendly Vacation Rentals
Ask first about their pet policy. What pets are allowed? How many are allowed? Do you have to pay extra deposits or pet fees for bringing your cat?
Once you know they allow pets, you should also ask about accommodations at the vacation rental. Do they have any special setup for your cats? Will you be required to bring all of your own supplies and pet bedding (if your cat is using them)?
You also need to talk about free-roaming cats. Some vacation rentals will only allow cats that are kept in carriers and not allowed to free roam in the home or on the property.
Is there insurance? Do they carry insurance to cover certain damages? Do you need to have your own insurance to cover any potential accidents or damage your cat may cause to the property? Of course, no one goes on vacation with their cat expecting there to be a problem, but accidents do happen and it pays to be prepared for them.
More Cat Things to Think About!
Have other pets been in the rental? If the vacation rental allows pets, then there is a good chance there have been other pets in there before. What is their process for cleaning after? Does your cat have a tendency to spray or mark when they smell another cat? This is something you might want to plan ahead for.
Do they provide litter boxes? Or do you need to bring your own? How are you supposed to dispose of litter when your cat is done? Knowing how you will handle waste, or how your vacation rental wants you to handle the waste is important to plan out going in.
Now that you have these tips, you’re ready to choose your own cat friendly vacation rentals. When looking at cat-friendly vacation rentals, you also want to look at what other features to rental has for your family.
While checking if they allow cats may be at the top of your list, there should still be other things ON the list. So, do your research and you will be able to find the perfect vacation rental for your entire family.

I’m sorry I just can not picture taking a cat on vacation with you, I have never taken my cat with me. Now on the other hand I used to own a travel trailer and it was set up at a park, if I were to stay the summer there then yes I would take my cat with me

Our cat has been in kidney failure and diabetic for 2 years. As long as she gets her treatments, she is doing great. But, they are needed daily, and absolutely will not board her. Solution: take her on vacation with us.
Sorry, 2 years is way too long without a vacation. She is coming with us.

I want to rent for a couple of months in Florida. So far I have had absolutely no luck finding anywhere that will allow me to bring my cats. It’s very sad. Every “Pet Friendly “ listing I see is for dogs only. I still inquire if I may bring my well behaved cats (2 seniors) and so far it’s a resounding, “No”.
Ive tried bring-along-your-pets type sites but I’m still not having any luck. The listings are mostly for hotels.

I too am finding it frustrating. Places that will accept a 50 pound dog will not allow one to bring a cat.

We just had a horrible experience at a “pet friendly” hotel in St Augustine. After we were settled in our room with our 2 little cats we received a call telling us the Front Desk made an error and cats were not allowed! There is definitely a bias against cats when traveling!

Experiencing exactly the same thing. It never occurred to me that NO ONE would accept cats. All we want to do is rent a condo diwn south to escape winter for a month or more. Don’t know what to do.

If you have a Cat he is a family member and if not going on the trip he will need a caretaker while you are away!

Thanks for the reminder that I should also consider litter boxes when looking for a place that accepts cats. I am opting for my family to go on a staycation this year in order to avoid crowded areas during the holidays. A vacation condominium rental might be perfect for us because we only have four members in the family, included the cat.
