You finally got yourself a cat! You are also preparing yourself for all the fun, hijinks and hairballs to come. However, you are still left with the task of choosing the right name for your cat. This task really isn’t as tough as it may seem, so allow the tips in this post to help lead you on your way!
Choosing the Right Name For Your Cat Matters!
Proper name or something else? – When you begin the hunt for your cat’s future name, you need to decide if you want a proper name, such as Charles, or rather a fun name such as Mr. Kitty Paws McTastic. Keep in mind that you have to actually USE that name for the rest of your cat’s life, so be kind. You don’t want to end up going to the veterinarian and putting down Poopy Boots or Fuzzy Balls.
Give it time – I can’t stress this one enough. When choosing the right name for your cat, you need to have time to get a feel for your cat and see what comes to you. I usually find that by day 3, I have a really good feel for what names would work best with my cat. A test run of the name also helps.
Keep Disney in mind – I love Disney just as much as the next person. Best of all is the fact that most of their classic characters have names that are perfect for cats. Many of my cats have been named for a favourite Disney character. My most recent addition was named Toulouse, after the adorable kitten from Aristocats. My Ragdoll is named Figaro, after the kitty cat in Pinocchio.
Ask friends – The beauty of social media is how easily we can connect with friends. This becomes useful because you can post a status asking for name suggestions for your newest bundle of fur. Throw up a picture of your adorable cat and see what they think up. You don’t have to actually make a choice from their answers, but it can definitely help.
Spend time with your cat – Just spending quality time with your cat will allow you to understand their habits, likes/dislikes, funny quirks, etc. When we adopted our tabby kitten years ago, he loved to go to the fridge. While I gave him a proper name of Orin, my husband only called him Piggles. So I adopted that name as it suits him best, since he still loves food!

I love what you said about spending quality time with your new cat, and naming him after one of his habits, quirks, or something else relating to his personality. I have been thinking about getting a cat for my family, and wanted to get some ideas for names. Having a name that relates to the cats personality would definitely be a fun way to name a cat. All that’s left is to find a good place to adopt a cat from.
