One of my family’s favourite Sesame Street characters has always been Cookie Monster. His love for cookies always brings smiles and laughter, so you really can’t help but love him.
When it came time to make a character birthday cake for my husband’s birthday, I instantly knew that a Cookie Monster Cake was the perfect fit!
You will need to bake a 2-layer 9-inch round cake. You can go with a boxed cake or homemade. Once the layers have cooled, you will need to level them before frosting them together. I went with homemade buttercream frosting (1/2 cup shortening, 1/2 cup butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 4 cups of confectioners sugar).
I also recommend dirty icing your cake so you don’t have crumbs floating around while you are trying to decorate.
For Cookie Monster, you will need homemade buttercream frosting tinted blue as well as enough fondant to create the eyes and mouth. You will need to tint your fondant black for the mouth and pupils.
I began by rolling the black fondant out flat and cutting it into a mouth shape, which I laid on the cake. Next, you will need to pipe the blue buttercream out with a Wilton Tip #233 to create the furry look.
Finally, roll the white fondant into two large circles for the eyes. Out of the black fondant, make pupils. You can use the buttercream to adhere the pupils to the eyes. Place on top of the cake and done!

That is awesome! The blue icing really does look like fur! What exactly is “dirty icing”?
