Jem and the Holograms Cake Tutorial

Jem and the Holograms Cake Tutorial

I had the pleasure of creating a JEM cake for a birthday recently and as a fan of this cartoon as a child, I just had to share a tutorial for making your own JEM and the Holograms cake! You will need to bake two layers of cake. I personally used two 9-inch round pans, but 8-inch would also work.

Once out of the oven and cooled, level both layers. Place the bottom layer on a cake board and pipe frosting, which will hold the top layer and bottom layer firmly together. I use Wilton Decorating Bags to make it quick and easy, but you can simply spread out a layer of frosting as necessary.

You can check out my Best Ever Buttercream Frosting for a perfect and delicious homemade frosting! You will need a medium consistency frosting for this cake and frosting you buy pre-made in a tub won’t cut it.

Once you place the top layer on the bottom layer, make sure the cake is leveled. Next, dirty ice the cake as shown below. For those who are not familiar with the word, dirty ice, it simply means to ice the cake without worrying about getting crumbs in the frosting.

Since the cake is going to be covered in frosting decoration, the bottom icing layer does not need to be crumb-free and white. Once decently covered and smooth, place in the fridge to cool down significantly. The cooler the icing/cake, the easier it will be to decorate it.

To transfer an image to a cake, you will need to take wax paper and lay it over the image you want to recreate. Tape it down to keep it still and trace the image with a pencil. Once complete, turn over the wax paper to the side without the pencil markings and trace the pencil sketch with Wilton Piping Gel.

If you don’t have piping gel, you can also tint some buttercream and trace with that, but it will not be as clean as using the gel. Once traced, take the wax paper and place it piping side down onto the cake top. Then, smooth down the wax paper so that the piping gel image rubs onto the cake top. Once completely smooth, slowly remove to reveal your image!

From this point, you will need to trace the piping gel with buttercream tinted black. I used Wilton Tip #2 for this portion. The rest can be completely in either Wilton #14, #16, or #18 tip. I always use Wilton Icing Colors for all my cake projects as they are concentrated and fantastic! I used icing colors Rose, Lemon, Red, Violet, Pink & Skin Tone.

As with anything, make this your own & be proud of what you create!

WOWZA! A baker, supermom, and an Artist? I don’t trust myself to try it but I think I can call in the troops to help me (my artist husband, and my bff baker). Great job!

What a gorgeous cake!! I’ve always been in awe of those that can decorate cakes…and had no idea you did this, until now, Kristen. You make it look so easy. Somehow I don’t think my version would turn out as spectacular 🙂

Hey Sandy!!! I have been doing it for a while, but we all have to start sometime, right {hehe} …. I always loved to bake. My Dad was the one who always loved my baking the most. When I finally started cake decorating, I wished so much that my Dad could see my work. I like to think maybe God gives him a sneak peek every now & again….*smile If you ever decide to give it a try, I am always happy to help with tons of useful info…..!!!

That is so impressive! We must be the same age because Jem was my favorite. I can still sing the main theme!
