Halloween is one holiday that can be enjoyed by all ages. Whether it be trick-or-treating, wearing a fun costume, or attending a Halloween party, there is always something for everyone.
However, it also means you need to take precautions to Keep Your Cat Safe on Halloween.
Keep Your Cat Safe on Halloween!
Black Cat Precautions – Black cats are a blessing. However, there are many individuals that get caught up in superstitions, cults, etc. that pose a serious risk to a black cat. While this is something that happens year-round, the risk is especially high around Halloween. Keep your black kitty safe indoors.
Keep the Candy for the Trick-or-Treaters – Treats are great, but are never meant for your cat. Chocolate can be fatal, so don’t even chance it. Keep your candy in a safe, secure cabinet that your cat cannot access. If you have trick-or-treating age children, remember to keep their candy out of reach from Mr. Kitty as well.
Keep Your Cat Inside – I believe in keeping cats indoors. For me, the alternative is far too great a risk. However, for those that have an indoor/outdoor cat, it is super important to keep your cat indoors on Halloween.
There is going to be more traffic, people, etc. and all these pose a risk to your cat. Don’t chance it. If you will be handing out candy at your door, it is a good idea to keep your cat in a room so he doesn’t slip out accidentally.
Make Halloween Stress Free – Most neighborhoods on Halloween are abuzz with traffic, trick-or-treaters, etc. For most cats, this will be stressful as their normal routine is being disturbed by new lights, people and sounds.
Again, keeping your cat indoors helps to lower stress as well as spending time with your cat to reassure him everything is okay. Bust out your cat comb and cat treats for a day filled with extra-kitty love for your cat!
Have a Meowy Halloween!
Be Costume Realistic – Most cats can’t stand a costume. At best, they lay there while you take a couple hurried photos before they start clawing their way to freedom.
If you must dress your cat, make sure it is a loose-fitting costume that isn’t restricting. A cute little cat bow tie or maybe a little hair bow for your fluffy princess would be easiest for your cat to tolerate.

Thank you for reminding everyone! it is really important especially with black cats to keep them inside on Halloween and the day before halloween. I have an indoor black cat but we even make sure to keep him in the basement in case he decides to dart it out the door when handing out candy

Great tips here. We once had a cat, she was supposed to be an indoor cat but she decided she’d rather be an in- and out-door cat much to my disappointment.
