Things to Consider Before You Adopt a Cat
Questions to ask yourself before adopting a cat:
- Do you have any other pets and how will they react to a new cat in the home?
- Do you have children at home and how will they react to the new cat in the home?
- How will your social life or work obligations impact your ability to care for a cat?
- Have you ever had a cat before?
- Do you understand the basics needs of a cat?
Be honest with yourself, no matter how excited you are about getting a new cat. You want to be sure this is really what you want and that you are prepared to take on the responsibility of owning a new cat as well.
Here are some things to know before adopting a cat:
- There may be an adoption fee when you first get your cat.
- You will also need to invest in some supplies like cat food and a litter box.
- Invest in toys for your cat and a scratching post (or more).
- You also need to pay for veterinarian services, collars and ID tags.
- A new cat will take up your time for training, especially in the beginning.
- The feeding schedule for cats is at least twice a day (more often for kittens) and will need a constant source of fresh water.
- Cats with long coats also need grooming/brushing every day.
- Cats are territorial. When you first bring your cat home, keep him in a smaller space/room. He will eventually get to roaming the whole house but you don’t want to overwhelm him at first.
- Keep his litter box in a private location. Most cats don’t like to go if it’s in a high traffic area or in the middle of a room.
- Look at your entire house through the eyes of a curious cat. What danger might he get into? It’s kind of like child-proofing.
Now that you know these things, you’re ready to begin planning for your new cat adoption. Get all the facts beforehand and you’ll be ready to bring your new furry friend home soon!
