Cat litter tracking… what a mess! You love your cat, but you don’t love that kitty litter getting spread all over your home. It’s messy and sometimes it can really hurt to step on it barefoot. Thankfully, my tips for keeping litter areas clean will help!
If you’re a cat parent, it can be a pain dealing with litter areas. If you have multiple cats, then it can be even more difficult to deal with keeping litter where it belongs. It can get on the floor, get tracked outside the litter box, and even carried throughout the house on your cat’s paws.
Tips for Keeping Litter Areas Clean
If you have carpets, it can be even worse because the litter really tends to stick in certain types of carpeting. So, what’s a cat owner to do?
Here are some tips on how to keep litter areas clean:
Try a different type of litter – There is no true “track-free” litter, but there are some brands and types that will track less. If you’re having issues, consider a heavier litter. Some people also find that newspaper pellets don’t track at all. From wood to clumping, there are a lot of different cat litter types and brands to check out!
More Tips for Fresh Litter Areas
Sweep and vacuum a lot – Sometimes you can’t do anything else other than clean it up. Consider a small dedicated broom just for the litter box area, or a small handy vac that you can use for just this purpose. Go through a few times a day after your cats have used the litter box and clean up outside it before it gets tracked everywhere else in the home.
Rethink your litter box – If your cat is older/big enough, consider a litter box with a higher side. This will help with litter scatter issues. You can also consider a covered litter box if that helps resolve the problem, but this isn’t usually preferred by kitty.
Use rugs and mats – Finally, you can also use rugs and floor mats under the litter box to help with this problem. When your cat gets out of the litter box, she will walk across the mat first, allowing some loose litter to come off there, rather than all over your house. Then just clean the mats regularly and you’re good to go.
A small amount of litter tracking is just a fact of life with cats. You can contain it and reduce it, but you’ll likely never get away from it completely.

I’m wondering what the reason for a metal litter scoop is. Why is the so much better than the plastic one?
Kristen says
A metal scoop is ridiculously STABLE, so it allows you to scoop more without worrying about breaking! Once you try it, you won’t ever go back to a plastic scoop!

I only have 1 cat, a senior.
I have 2 litter boxes and rotate. Let 1 air out while the other one is being used. I put the dates on the bottom in marker, then when I get a new one I throw away the oldest. Its worked well. I try to minimize the changes to not stress her out.
