When it comes to cats, diligence in paying attention to small changes can make all the difference. As much as we love our cats, it is important to remember that they can’t specifically tell us they are suffering with something.
Lower Urinary Tract Disease in cats is commonly diagnosed and there can be a number of causes. Making sure you understand the symptoms and proper treatment options are vital in keeping your cat healthy and happy.
Urinary Tract Disease in Cats
Symptoms of Lower Urinary Tract Disease – The most obvious change in your cat’s behavior will be an avoidance to their litter box. You will find that your cat will be urinating outside their litter box on a consistent basis. Keep in mind that to your cat, they see the litter box as the cause of their pain.
Thus, it leads to them avoiding it. I can’t stress enough that this is not just your cat giving you “cattitude,” but rather a medical attention that needs immediate attention from your vet.
Prevention Options – The first step in preventing urinary tract disease in your cat is knowledge. Next comes the need for proper nutrition, a full water dish, clean litter box and a safe environment for your cat. One of your best options for a proper nutritional diet is Royal Canin’s Urinary SO.
The product is veterinarian-approved and you can usually always find it at your local vet’s office! Over the years, many of my cats have had urinary tract disease issues and I can personally speak to how fabulous the Urinary SO is. Both the dry food and the wet formula are so important because urinary tract disease can come on so quickly!
Treatment – Once you suspect your cat has a lower urinary tract infection, get seen by your vet immediately. If left untreated, it can lead to fatal results for male cats.

Very informative…..I’m pretty sure my cat has never had this issue, but now I know what signs to look for!

Once they have it, it can be very expensive to fix as well – best to avoid if you can.

My male cat had a Urinary Tract problem that led to crystals in his urine. I didn’t realize how common and dangerous these problems are. What led us to believe something was amiss was him urinating on the furniture (so keep a look out for out-of-the-ordinary behaviours). We got him checked out just in time. Since then he has been on the RC Urinary SO dry food and we have had not further problems.

I had a cat with this problem and I always felt so bad for him because he would get really sick every time.
