What to Pack in Hospital Bag

Prior to my Son’s birth in January of this year, I made a lot of preparations. Since I was having a C-section, I wanted to make sure that everything around the house was ready to go for baby when we brought him home.

I obviously wouldn’t be able to get back to my usual routine after his birth for at least a month, so preparation was vital for my own peace of mine. One very important preparation was my hospital bag.

I had been through the hospital routine several times before, so I was pretty comfortable knowing what I need to bring for the 3 days I would be in the hospital. However, I made sure to check with the hospital as well because each hospital is different, so I wanted to make sure I didn’t leave anything important out.

Packing Your Hospital Bag

The first thing I must mention is that I prefer to bring a suitcase to the hospital, rather than a bag. While you will be packing for yourself, you need to keep in mind items for your spouse {if he will be staying with you} and items you will need to bring baby home. With these three things in mind, here is a breakdown of what your hospital bag should look like:

For You:

  • Slippers/Socks
  • Nursing Bras
  • Shower/Bath Supplies {razor, deodorant, hairbrush, toothbrush, toothpaste, body wash}
  • Extra outfit for when you leave the hospital.
  • Lip balm
  • Hair supplies
  • Reading Material {Book/Magazines}

For Your Spouse:

  • Change of clothing
  • Slippers/Socks
  • Camera
  • Sleepwear

For Bringing Baby Home:

  • Going home outfit
  • Blanket
  • Sleepers to wear in the hospital
  • Socks
  • Coat/Snowsuit if winter.
  • Infant car seat

    Thank you! I brought way too much stuff to the hospital when my son was born.. this time around (I’m due in February), I have a much better idea of what will be useful and what will definitely NOT be useful 🙂

    Love the little foot 🙂 I remember with my first son, I packed like 2 months before my due date. I was SO ready and SO prepared that everyone made fun of me. Wasn’t so prepared with my second as he came 7 weeks early though. It was definitely better to be prepared! Way less stress.

    Hee hee, when I was pregnant with my first, when we went to the hospital the first time (I had to go a couple of times before he was actually ready to come out), I followed all the different lists I could find. We probably had about 10 bags with us, my husband had to make 2 trips! When it was time for my second, I think I had 1 bag.

    A suitcase is such a smart idea! That way you can find everything without having to pull stuff out like you would with a bag.
