Simple Tips for Introducing a New Cat

The most recent addition to our family came several months ago in the form of an adorable ragdoll kitten. I hadn’t planned on getting a kitten, but anyone who knows me knows that I simply can never say no to a kitten, or a cat for that matter! While adding a new cat to our household is always fabulous, it isn’t without a little worry.

However, these Simple Tips for Introducing a New Cat into your home will help to ease the transition. For the kitten, whom we named Figaro, the transition ended up being ridiculously easy. Thankful, he was immediately accepted by most of my cats.

Simple Tips for Introducing a New Cat

Bath time!
Cats are all about smell. The first thing they notice when being introduced to a new cat is their unfamiliar smell. Save yourself some time and give your new cat a well-deserved bath. It will allow your new cat to smell familiar sooner rather than later!

Play it Safe!
Play it safe with your new cat and put them in a cat carrier for the first introduction. It will allow them a safe experience and you can get a better feel for how accepting your cat is willing to be.

Sniff It Out!
Once you feel comfortable, open the cat carrier and let the cats sniff it out. Stay close to keep the experience civil!

Stay Close!
For the first few days, make sure to keep a close eye on the cats. This is the best way to keep your cats safe and friendly.

Be Attentive!
It is especially important that each cat knows they are loved and that no one will be left out. Make sure to show each cat attention and love. It is also a great time to have a group play session.

I, as well, have introduced new members to the household. These are solid tips, and I find all is calm after the “honeymoon period” is over.

What a cutie! I never even thought about bathing the new cat, or any cat actually. It sounds like a smart idea!
