Most people are familiar with different dog breeds but not everyone knows that cats come in different breeds as well. Many of the cats you see out and about are considered non-pedigree cats. They’re happy, full of love to give, and super friendly. They’re the most common type of feline you’ll find around.

Understanding different cat breeds is important! That said, there are some pedigree cat breeds and if you’d like to learn a bit more about them, we have a run-down for you.

Understanding Different Cat Breeds is important for your kitty. From British to Burmese to Oriental to Persian to Maine Coon, they are all worth your love!

British cat breeds – The British Shorthair cat comes from regular domestic cats and it is found in a wide range of colors and patterns of coat. You can find them in white or black, or even silver tabby.

This type of cat was bred in the 19th century to help preserve the cats’ unique qualities. Some other British cats are the Manx and the Selkirk Rex.

Burmese – Burmese cats may be a breed you’ve heard of before. They are vocal and like to make their presence known. Sometimes they are called the “dog cat” because of their canine-like loyalty to their owners.

Burmese love to get attention of their owners and they will get right in your face to get it if they have to. It’s a medium-sized breed with a rounded chest and head, and large eyes, and they also have a soft velvety coat. It can come in a variety of colors.

Oriental – Many people have seen the Oriental breeds before. They come in short and long haired. The short-haired is the Siamese and they have pointed markings making this breed very unique.

Long haired Orientals are the Angora. They usually have yellow or green eyes. The white Orientals have blue eyes.

Persian – This is a breed that many people know because they are often shown on TV. The Persian has long, glamorous fur. Their coat can grow as much as six inches in length, making them fluffy and elegant in appearance.

Persians need a lot of grooming. Their eyes can also weep a lot, and need cleaned and taken care of.

Maine Coon – Another fluffy cat is the Maine Coon. They are also the largest breed. They have a lion-like ruff around their neck and they have hairy ears. Their tails can look like a raccoon (which is why they are called the Maine Coon).

They are great hunters and they are very trainable and make great pets. They do need a lot of stimulation and time outdoors, however.

These are just a few common cat breeds but it’s not all. If you find all of this interesting, you can learn more about the different types of cat breeds around today.

I had a maine coon growing up, and she definitely was a good hunter. You are right about them needing lots of time outdoors. 🙂 I love cats and you have a lot of great information to explore on your blog. Thanks for posting!

When we got HoPo, our vet said, watch out. Calicos are high maintenance!!! lol It turned out to be true but I think it’s more from her background as a stray (she lived all on her own for a while and got hit by a car so she’s quite skittish) than her breed. I didn’t know about other breeds though and this is really interesting information. Thanks!
